He was delegated at Westminster Nunnery in London by the Ecclesiastical overseer of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
The king was crowned while sitting in the Coronation Chair with the Sceptre with the Cross in his gloved right hand and the Sceptre with the Dove in his left. The St. Edward’s Crown, which was made in 1661 and will only be worn during the ceremony, served as his crown.
The Westminster Abbey bells rang for two minutes after the crown was put on his head. The Coronation Chair was then escorted to the throne for King Charles.
The regalia of the coronation were presented to King Charles prior to the ceremony.
The Sword of Offering and the spurs, which “symbolize knighthood,” were presented to him first. “Bracelets of sincerity and wisdom,” or two gold armills the Coronation Orb, which “symbolizes the Christian world” and has three sides that represent the three medieval continents; and the Sovereign’s Ring, which is not worn during the ceremony but symbolizes commitment.
After that, Charles was given the coronation glove, which represented him as an advocate and challenger for the protection of the people and was identical to the glove his mother wore when she was crowned. He was then given the sovereign’s staff with cross which addresses “the sovereign’s worldly power,” and the Sovereign’s Staff with Bird, which addresses “the sovereign’s otherworldly job.”
A few minutes earlier, Charles took the oath and kissed the Bible after swearing: In the presence of God, I, Charles, do solemnly and sincerely declare that I am a faithful Protestant and that I will uphold and maintain the enactments to the best of my abilities in accordance with law, in accordance with the true intent of the enactments that secure Protestant succession to the throne.
In a congregation of 2,300 people, his family was seated closest to him, but Prince Harry was in the third row, away from Prince William, his family, and other working royals.
To reflect the “loving service” theme of the service, a special personal prayer was written for the King. The words were partly inspired by the well-known hymn “I Vow To Thee My Country.”
He said:
‘God of compassion and mercy whose son was sent not to be served but to serve, give grace that I may find in thy service perfect freedom and in that freedom knowledge of thy truth. Grant that I may be a blessing to all thy children, of every faith and belief, that together we may discover the ways of gentleness and be led into the paths of peace; through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.’
