In the Suleja Area of Niger State, Nigerian soldiers are claimed to have opened fire on suspected thugs who had taken over trailers filled with food.
The incident occurred on Thursday when thugs who had set fire to tires on the road halted numerous trailers traveling from Abuja to Kaduna.
Alhassan Abdullahi, an eyewitness who talked with Daily Trust, claimed that before the military intervened, numerous bags of various items, particularly rice, were taken.
He said that even after soldiers opened fire in the air, the thugs remained at the scene.
He claimed, “To scare the thugs away, military had to intervene. They arrived on the spot and began shooting gunshots into the air. However, despite that, a large number of them left with bags of rice and cartons of spaghetti and other food items.
“We learnt commercial motorcycle riders are also planning a protest. They would have done it since yesterday, but we didn’t know what stopped them.”
The latest development comes amid the nationwide hardship that has triggered protests in different parts of the country.
