Tems, a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has talked about how bullied she was because of the high pitch of her voice.Tems revealed that she didn’t start speaking until the age of three in an interview with The Cut.
She claimed that because her voice didn’t sound like other girls’, she experienced self-consciousness as a child.
I was laughed at and harassed until I started crying. This gave them the idea that I had an awful voice and that I sounded like a boy or a frog.
“I was in my own little universe all the time. I tried to get the females to sing my songs when I did make friends, but I had a bass voice and the other girls had these lovely, high voices.
