Planned cancellation of the eight-month strike has been denied by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU.
Social media was ablaze with rumors last night that the academic union had decided to end its strike after meeting with the government’s negotiating delegation, which was chaired by Senator Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, on Friday, November 27.

The Federal Government allegedly raised its offer of Earned Allowances (EA) to unions located at universities and increased funds for the revitalization of public universities from N65 billion to N70 billion during a meeting with the union at the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s Conference Hall.

According to reports yesterday night, the union would end the walkout after the federal government promised to pay N70 billion, or N40 billion, for earned allowances and N30 billion for the university system’s regeneration.

It was also claimed that the government consented to pay the teachers who were displeased their salary arrears by December 31.

The report further stated that ASUU was supposed to inform its organs of the agreement, inform the government of their decision, and then declare the day on which the strike would end.
